I share PCIJ’s sentiments on this one: against making a big deal out of it.
My first theory is this: the report was leaked by an insider who wants to put certain Isafp guys in trouble. Ifsap is presently caught in an ugly internal war (and that’s an understatement). Some Isafp guys are said to be running Isafp like their fiefdom. In the process, of course, they bruise some egos. Add to this the fact that the position of Isafp chief is up for grabs now. (Not to mention the chief of staff position, which will be vacated in June).
My second theory is this: that this was leaked to certain people precisely to force a reaction from the groups mentioned in the list and sharpen/highlight the military’s anti-Left campaign.
My third theory is this: that this was not leaked at all; it just landed on the lap of lucky people. Which then makes this whole thing more bizarre: the publicity has made some elements in the AFP happy precisely because they have been hoping that this report, while described as “internal,” would reach a wider audience.
Oh, brother!
Anyway, for whatever it is worth, the publicity has made some Isafp guys happy and others in that fenced-in compound sleepless. Not that the sleepless guys dont deserve it though (the troubled sleep, I mean).

The reason we were against the media publishing, and making a big deal, of this so-called intelligence information is that we’d only be helping the military propagate its lies. Thus far, they’ve had to peddle this untruth from town to town. Now it’s all over the papers.

Oh please! You treat your readers as if they were bobo. If this is where our taxmoney is going to, if this is what the military is up to… then we Filipino taxpayers deserve the right to know re this.

You are not helping the military “propagate it’s lies” by exposing the truth. On the contrary, the more informed the people are, the more they’ll hold the arroyo administration accountable for their questionable actions.

And the reason they go “from town to town” with this garbage is because they want this thing done “below the radar”. The military want to slowly disseminate propaganda to ordinary townsfolks without getting the attention of the media. And PCIJ is actually helping them with this kind of attitude. And it’s not only the media these a-holes are targetting but the political opposition, the church and other anti-gloria groups as well.

So I’m a little disappointed with you Sheila, instead of informing the public, you lean more towards self-censorship.

But is the fact that the CD names journalists’ groups as enemies a threat to press freedom? Perhaps. Is the naming of CBCP an enemy of the state a threat to Catholicism?

If Marcos or Erap’s military and police behaved the same way as GMA’s men, would you be more concerned, Sheila? Or would you just laugh it off too?

I agree with you Sheila that there is no need to propagate the military’s (un)intelligence by releasing this report and making it a big deal. This whole thing about the public’s “right to know” and not being a “bobo” audience is shallow and trite reasoning. The truth is (and this is evidenced by the public’s hyper reaction to every morsel of information coming from all sorts of sources from the reliable to the The Buzz type), the Filipino audience loves being in on the latest news, and treats every bit of it as the next biggest scandal since Kris Aquino’s STD revelations. given the military’s very low credibility you would do the people service by publishing this story. it’s just a matter of presenting it in the proper context and not as a “straight” news.

the public deserves to know that their church group or their colleagues are being tagged as enemies of the state… we are apparently being brainwashed to believe this trash… or at least to doubt the institutions and people that make this world a little more sane…

whether we believe it or not, however, my worst episode of anxiety attack is that one fine morning the military will gain enough legal basis to arrest me in my place of worship, along with my church leaders and I don’t even belong to the dominant religious group here but to an outspoken minority religious group.
