THE resignation this morning of eight Cabinet members and two senior revenue officials has opened the floodgates for various groups to echo calls for President Arroyo to step down. In a single press conference, the Makati Business Club (MBC) and Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex), and a coalition of NGOs issued their respective statements, both of which vouched for the integrity and competence of the Secretaries who had quit and asked the President to resign.
"It is with a heavy heart that we ask the president to relinquish her position … for the sake of national unity, and for the sake of moving forward," the MBC and Finex said in a statement read for the media by MBC chairman, Ricardo Romulo. The two groups said all moves for change must then take place "firmly within the context of the Constitution."
NGO leader Karen Tañada, meanwhile, in her group’s statement mourned the loss of the ten Cabinet members, all of them, she said, "men and women of credibility who have served the country in and outside the government." The NGOs called on the President to step down and expressed support for her Constitutional successor. That successor, they said, should immediately order for the creation of a fact-finding commission so all those involved in electoral fraud in May 2004 "may be brought before the bar of justice." The new president must immediately revamp government and institute wide-ranging reforms.
This is the same group that issued a statement over a week after the tapes were first made public, then calling for the President to break her silence and asking the public to be vigilant.

Kinausap na ni GMA si Kabayan. The vice president will replace Dinky Soliman sa DSWD.
a french playwright Jean Racine said, ” It behooves a prudent person to make trial of everything before ARMS” (highlights mine).
perhaps our leaders does not know any other language; deliberately chosen to ignore the writings on the walls (and the Net), save that be overthrown with FORCE?
a pity scenario indeed.
[...] TWO business groups have earlier called on President Arroyo to resign. Meanwhile, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) stands by its position that the President’s resignation could only be voluntary. [...]
People who mindlessly clamor for her resignation are not thinking about the consequences. Do they seriously think a De Castro in Malacanang will be able to hack it? And do they further think that all this political pornography will end at that point? As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow the opposition and the usual sore losers will continue to hammer away until they realize their self-centered political agendas. In the meantime this country will keep sinking while this orgy of destructive and divisive politics goes on. The economy be damned! It’s power, stupid!
selfish businessmen, all you think about is money, money, money– yours at that!

This move came far too late. GMA was able to consolidate her forces by then. It also appears that the move was telegraphed to her much ahead of time. Has the dreaded polarization finally taken shape?
Now the larger problem is: what would happen to the economy if the stand-off could not be resolved. Is the business sector now situationally forced to go into “civil disobedience?” Can they afford not to?
Will there be retaliatory actions from the powers that be?
With Comm. Parayno out, who can stop the BIR examiners from going into extortion spree? If Customs was an open city before, what would it become starting this coming Monday?
What would be the peso exchange rate? How much more dollars does Central Bank have to intervene?
I cannot understand why the people cannot force their president to resign. All calls for GMA to resign are more than mere requests. Regardless of the reasons cited, or the level of politeness or civility in deliveries, all calls are forceful in nature and in the form of demands.
To say that the people cannot force their president to resign is like saying that the Constitution is above the people. Anyone who says it must be asked to read the Preamble again. The people can give, they can take it away. We are not living under despotic authoritarianism. Are we?
Please transmit this to all those concerned.
People in metro manila shouldn’t have the final say regarding the presidency. There are more people outside metro manila. So it is only right that we are also heard.
What authorianism are you talking about Wilson? Is anyone controlling you or holding you back from talking against the president? The mob in metro manila who calls on the resignation of pres. arroyo is, in fact, very abusive and is veering dangerously into lawlessness.
People in the provinces do not want extraconstitutional means in resolving this crisis. What’s the use in having a constitution if we do not follow it?
The moment metro manila uses the mob in forcing GMA to resign, we in the provinces will secede. That is not just a threat. Bahala na kayo sa magulong buhay niyo in that God forsaken place called manila. We will refuse to recognize any leader chosen through unconstitutional means. We refuse to be involved in your quicksand of chaos and anarchy. Please transmit this to all concerned.
Now that the Bishops made known their stand, this will embolden GMA to cling to power coupled by the support of former President Ramos.
GMA is kapit-tuko and the Bishops call for her to examine her conscience is not in the language of GMA.
As she clings herself to power, resignation not being an option, then the political lines are drawn to makle way for other options available to the people.
If the people so decide in their complaceny, then we are doomed to accept the fate of our country — a countrry led by a cheater and corrupt members of her family.
To paraphase the statements of the Bishops: “Mga anak, magtiis na lang muna tayo”
