Untouchable po ba sila cory at danding at hindi magawang batikusin ng media about these two massacres?
  • hopeless_race : Its sad that we pinoys are blind to the fact of what had happened in mendiola and hacienda luisita.

Biggest anti-Arroyo rally

Posted by: Luz Rimban | July 13, 2005 at 4:29 pm
Filed under: In the News

THE crowd started gathering on Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas in Makati this morning and by mid-afternoon, according to the opposition, had swollen to 65,000 people. It was the biggest ever anti-Arroyo rally mounted by the political opposition and civil society since the "Hello Garci" controversy broke in early June.

(Police estimated the crowd initially at 30,000 and later at 15,000.)

"The basis of unity is the call for (President Arroyo’s) resignation and nothing more — for now," said House minority floor leader Francisco Escudero.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay said the rally was the outcome of meetings of 50 political parties and nongovernment organizations.

He said the "Hyatt 10" — referring to seven Cabinet members and three agency heads who resigned last Friday and called on the president to step down — helped in the mobilization.

Escudero said the former Cabinet members have agreed to testify if impeachment proceedings are initiated against Arroyo.

The prominent personalities in the Makati rally include Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Rep. Satur Ocampo, former Sen. Ernesto Maceda, former University of the Philippines president Francisco Nemenzo, former defense secretary Renato de Villa and showbiz personalities Lorna Tolentino, Armida Siguion Reyna, Carlitos Siguion Reyna and Bibeth Orteza.

Representatives of Akbayan, Partido Manggagawa, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, An Waray, Moro National Liberation Front and Courage (an organization of government employees), among other groups, also joined the rally calling for the president’s resignation.

Serving as marshals for the personalities were people clad in T-shirts that read "Guardians Brotherhood Inc.," an organization of active and retired members of the military.

The crowd was awaiting the appearance of Susan Roces, widow of opposition presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr.

Roces had called on Arroyo to resign after the president publicly admitted on June 27 calling a Comelec official in connection with the May 2004 elections.

i was there at AYALA and I witnessed the rally. I hope the impeachment will now push through. I do believe the best way to settle everything is through impeachment.

eyesWIDEopen wrote on July 13, 2005 - 8:19 pm | Visit Link

yes, impeachment is the right thing to do, however if gloria still does have a genuine concern for the good of the country, she should save us the time and trouble and resign from her post voluntarily, a tedious impeachment is not what we need at this time. the crisis will only go on for longer.. bka matagalan pa lalo un recovery. but unless the military steps in she cannot be ousted, thats why the best we could do is ask for her to resign her post.

E dati nga, even hundreds of thousands could not remove doubt that “the people have spoken” in the last two people power “revolutions”.

what ‘will of the people’ do you represent?

hmm.. i would however agree with benign0 on one point, the people in ayala are ‘odd’ , why? ive been to edsa1 even (tho i was still a child then, i can remember being there) ive been to edsa2(even cheered when arroyo rose to power), i wasnt on edsa3 (but i wondered why so many people still oppose gma at that time) the answer was, she doesnt have the capability to lead us and unify the filipinoes.. that was evident then, so she shldnt have run for pres on the 2k4 elections imo. if she truly wanted to go t the next step of recovery at that time, coz the nation was still divided. ok, back to why i agree the ppl in ayala are ‘odd’, its because for the first time, im seeing ppl from edsa2 and ppl from edsa3 together in ayala.. although the current situation may have moulded the event being as it is as we see it now. that’s really something.. for once i see unity from the ppl of groups which have been against each other before..

Paulit ulit nalang diba? 2. Wala si COry kasi baka hindi na sumunod ang tao sa kanya at dahil lahat dun puro Marcos men eh tsika sya so asikasuhin nya muna ang HAcienda Luisita saka si Kris. 2.

tabz, if you were at least in your 20’s during edsa 1, you would know why undecide people (at least in their 40’s), in today’s issue, take Tatad’s (and his cohorts’) leaked tape with a grain of salt. magaling sila sa propaganda at magpakasasa sa sarili. try asking your parents. that’s part of history

Looks like the best words anyone can come up with to describe the kind of people who took to the streets in Ayala yesterday was “curious mix”.

Why not just say it outright. All we saw out there were jologs and the usual hakots. A fitting audience to the starirays clowning around on stage.

benign0 wrote on July 14, 2005 - 7:32 am | Visit Link

PEACE, MAN. GOD BLESS !

bensgr8, whats there to know, i dun find any relevenace from wht ur saying to todays happenings, let the undecided do what they want.. which is mostly sit back and watch as things go.. my parents stand are the same as mine.

benign0, enuff with the sarcasm, get off ur high horse and just say that ur pro gma and be done with it, ill respect u more for that. ksi i dont know where ur going with ur comments.. those ppl made sacrifices to go there so dont clasify them as ‘jologs’ or ‘hakot’, the only hakot ive heard in the radio were on that small pro gma rally yesterday where the reporter was interviewing some ppl lining up for some hand cash. try going to the rallies sometme, ask the ppl what they came there for what their concerns are and what they want.. look at the reality of the ppl that is different from ur perspective.

tabz wrote on July 14, 2005 - 10:59 am | Visit Link

The undecided propably believe the phrases:
“Better safe than sorry” and “Haste makes waste”.

let gma’s pr people have their say. they’re not going to convince people here anyway.

masha wrote on July 14, 2005 - 11:23 am | Visit Link

by the way, if gma intends to stay for the rest of the 5 years, she’ll just be working on her pr and we’re just going to play the hello garci ringtone in reply. she has lost the respect of the few whoever had it. i never did first of all i know she’s matapobre. and that respect cannot be gained back. ever.

philstar published a report on mikey arroyo’s rise in wealth from 50K to 76M in a few years. wow. is that why he left? can we forfeit his property? iggy arroyo is worth 300M by the way when a few years ago he only paid 19K in taxes. he was down and out a few years ago and now he’s a millionaire 3 hundred times over? sus. temperance clearly is not in the arroyos minds.

masha wrote on July 14, 2005 - 11:33 am | Visit Link

That is the reason why Mikey and FGMA left the country to store the loot somewhere else. To be quite honest i dont like Erap and FPJ to actually become president, but if GMA remains till 2010, Heaven help us!, When i found out that her brother in law iggy arroyo also ran for the elections and won together with her moviestar wannabe son Mikey, it virtually nullified everything that she promised to do, for only in the philippines does a man who earned his 15sec. of fame by forging his brother’s signature become a congressman!!! This simply meant that GMA was not at all serious in cleaning up the government. Right now we need a president who has more empathy rather than Sympathy, to better understand what this country really needs.

junkadz wrote on July 14, 2005 - 12:13 pm | Visit Link

the reason why some people find the rally in makati ‘odd’ because of the different personalities involved (imee, butz aquino, leftists, civil society) is that at this moment they have the same interest.

observe them few months from now…chances are they would be in different side of the fence again…

talagang totoo, in politics there are no permanent friends/enemies, only permanent interest.

Why do you ask?

after PCIJ “censored” my comments a few issues ago, i decided i won’t comment anymore.

but benign0’s last comment made me laugh. (just a comment).

for my last comment, i just want to state my conviction which i’m sure is shared by many and equally misunderstood by many (probably by the younger ones).

I…

1. will go out in the streets to oust a tyrant
2. will go out in the streets to oust a thief
3. will go out in the streets to oust a cheat (but please show us harder evidence)

and lastly, won’t and probably never will lock arms with people of 1 & 2. unless they APOLOGISE.

Ang Malungkot na OFW

Ako’y isang hamak na OFW lamang.
Boses ko’y ayaw pakikinggan.
Marahil s’guroy kaliwa’t kanang iringan,
Walang humpay na batikusan.

Dapat sana ako ay masaya
Dahil ang pera kong ipapadala,
Lumalaking parang dambuhala.
Dahil sa peso’y bumaba na.

Sige, sige! Mag-rally pa tayo!
Nang lalong sumadsad ang Peso.
Nakararaming Pilipino’y
Ito’y namay gusto.

Hingi ko lang wa’g nyo po
Kaming kalilimutan
Dahil remittance namin
Ay bumubuhay sa Inang Bayan

Ilang beses na naming napatunayan,
Asian Financial Crisis
Ang Pinas ang di masyadong naapektuhan.
Kami bayani na dapat tatandaan.

Ako’y nalulungkot at nagdalamhati
Sa Pinas ayaw ng employer kung puti.
Pag-hire nila dito’y masama’t
Walang ikakabuti.

Just watching JDV now sa get real with Ces Drilon. from that conversation one can really identify what a trapo is… here are some of my observations.
1. Mag jojoke lalu na pag serious na ung usapan. Parang joke ung business of running the country.
2. Daming reasons just to get u to see their point kahit na its a flawed point.
4. Magaling manakot, dati ung communist ung reason now economy naman.
5. Magaling magwaldas ng pera ng bayan dahil di naman galing sa bulsa nila in the first place.
6. Putting the blame on others kahit na sila ang in charge.

Well in some kinda relation There is the biggest anti and pro. Today (july 16) around 80,000-100,000 (ariel photograph) people were reported gathered in Luneta today. To rally support for Ms. Gma. Although the PNP reported about 125,000 came to show. But saying that they did not reach their goal of 200,000. But at 5pm daw the total turn-out was estimated around 250,000 people. Woah. I really dont know what to belive. These numbers are goin up and down. Whats next I ask? darn it..

Students of public schools in Manila were compelled to attend the rally.Government vehicles were used to hakot rallyistas in which case it should be used on official business only.

Tobebs,
Yeah thats right bro. Some students had to go and were not allowed to talk to media about they being forced. But some did anyway. Some workers were forced by their boss daw. The fee given was about 200-300 pesos. Along with marienda, drinks etc. I wonder where they got all that money? Tax? Hmm.. thats some heavy funding there. And plus their were diffrent reported numbers of people. there was 250,000, 145,000 (PNP) 80,000-100,000 (International Media) 75,000 (Local media) 50,000 and 15,000 (rallyists say) The numbers are up and down the wall. Hmm.. I dont know if its a boosting morale technique but if they were to hold a rally sana man lang they showed some decency. Atleast the opposition gave free food sinigang, toccino and fried rice and those 30p mcdo meals. And some monobloc chairs for accomedations. But this one.. being forced to go? I just cant understand.. but I cant blame them. No way. Most of their reasons reported were, “I needed the allowance, there was just no chance to pass. How could I?” Oh dear. Whats next?

Godbless! INgats!

Naz wrote on July 17, 2005 - 10:27 am | Visit Link

The opposition, frustrated that it could not rile up citizens the way EDSA I and EDSA II did, has been holding various rallies ostensibly to demonstrate that Filipinos are behind the move to force PGMA out.
Sadly, those rallies have been spectacular duds, with numbers much fewer than expected though it is well known a number of those were paid to attend the rallies.

Even the presence of movie stars could not move citizens to attend, proving beyond doubt that most Filipinos are simply tired of these protests and of the same cast of characters who have been rebuffed in previous eletions.

The message is clear: Impeach President Arroyo if you have grounds to do so, or just butt out of those futile and hysterical rallies.

Happy days are here again for solons, local officials…

WHY are there so many governors and mayors in Metro Manila? Somebody asked this question at a gathering last Saturday. Shouldn’t they be in their hometowns and provinces attending to the needs of their constituents?

“They were summoned here to pledge support to President Macapagal-Arroyo,” was the answer.

“Why are they so eager to go to Malacañang?” was the next question.
“Because of the pabaon that each of them gets.”

Indeed, proceeds from the expanded VAT have not yet been collected but they are already being spent and distributed by Malacañang. And because of the impending impeachment complaint against GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo), happy days are here again for the congressmen and, soon, for the senators. Administration congressmen were seen trooping to the Palace to pledge support for GMA and when they went out, they were seen to be very happy.

Suddenly, the budget department has also been ordered to release pork barrel allocations to congressmen. Not so long ago, it was very hard to get fund releases for projects because the budget secretary had a hard time scraping up enough funds. Now that Emilia Boncodin is no longer the budget secretary, the department is very generous.
“If the stalemate over the presidency continues some more, the government will go bankrupt,” somebody quipped.

Indeed, as some of the Hyatt 10 Cabinet members who resigned and asked GMA to do the same said, all the priorities of government are to ensure her political survival; governance takes the back seat.

At the end of the day, we filipinos are the losers…
Our hard earned money only goes to choosen few pockets who bluff, deceived, and cheated us right straight in our face.

When can we see the light at the end of the tunnel…

Although I have strong sentiments that Arroyo had lost her credibility to lead the country, and should therefore resign, I’d be caught dead joining a rally with the likes of Lacson, Maceda, Susan Roces and their ilk. It’s a shame that elements of both the Left and Right would coagulate around these personalities like flies around sh*t.

Pare-pareho lang sila. Walang pagkakaiba. Nagsisipag-gamitan lang ng isa’t-isa. I’ve been through both EDSA 1 and 2. Kayo?

[...] The CPR policy was announced by Malacañang in September last year, following anti-government protests that began as the Gloriagate controversy broke out (here and here) and continuing amid the Congressional hearings on impeachment charges against the President. The impeachment charges were killed in July. [...]
