Untouchable po ba sila cory at danding at hindi magawang batikusin ng media about these two massacres?
  • hopeless_race : Its sad that we pinoys are blind to the fact of what had happened in mendiola and hacienda luisita.

Extravaganza at Ayala

IT was a showbiz extravaganza. Alma Moreno and Lorna Tolentino were there. So were director Joel Lamangan, who served as fiery emcee, and several other members of filmdom’s glitterati. But the biggest star was of course, Susan Roces, who was mobbed by the crowd when she arrived on Ayala Avenue. At 6:45 p.m., before a raucous crowd she finally spoke. It was vintage Susan: a combination of homespun wisdom and this time, perceptibly more subtle digs at President Arroyo. (Mrs. Poe this evening was a much kinder, calmer and gentler version of the fiery Susan we last saw at Club Filiipino on June 29, two days after the presidential apology.)

Addressing the youth this evening, Roces said, "Ang pandaraya ay mali at di dapat tularan. (Cheating is bad and should not be followed.)" She also deplored what she said was the Arroyo administration’s various ways of "evading" the issues and "confusing" the public with calls for charter change. She stressed the need to use peaceful means to resolve the crisis. "Wag tayong basta magtitiwala o maniniwala. Ang kinabukasan ninyo ang mahalaga para sa amin (Let us not trust what they say. We have to study whether the options being presented will do us good, whether these will benefit the majority. Our future is important.)

Many hours before Roces finally spoke the crowd had already warmed up. There was singing and dancing, as popular tunes whose words were customized for the occasion blared from sound systems atop jeeps on various corners of the avenue. The banners were present, so were Garci effigies, and monochrome umbrellas painted with letters spelling out OUST GLORIA.

The crowd was made up of followers of organized political groups, ranging from opposition parties (pro-FPJ, pro-Erap and pro-Lacson), NGOs and political movements (all the various Left groups were here). The banners were obviously well prepared. There was even a stage with a dressing room behind it. While the mood was upbeat, it did not quite have the spontaneity of Edsa 1 and Edsa 2.

Here are some of the photos taken earlier:

of course not. because it was a scheduled rally and not meant to be a “people power” type gathering ala Edsa.

We’re not there… yet. ;)

your correct john. it wasn’t meant to be like EDSA 1 and 2. It was a scheduled rally. Although I am at work at that time, i did went out to join the rally during my 1 hour break.

walang kabuluhan…

does not represent the sentiments of the whole nation…

Askal wrote on July 13, 2005 - 11:35 pm | Visit Link

Leo wrote on July 13, 2005 - 11:47 pm | Visit Link

That’s why Askal is not in Ayala. He doesn’t believe in pagbabago. Referring to a pinoy fiesta = walang kabuluhan? Demeaning surveys showing GMA negative trust rating? And ofcourse the geographic comment… simple its not the sentiments of the nation.

Well, maybe its because Malacanan is in Manila. Kahit namn sa US ang mga tao pag me issue kay Bush sa Washington sila nagrarally, hindi sa probinsya.

San ba pinaguusapan ang jueteng-gate, hello-garci? Dba sa Tongreso? Saan ba ang tongreso? Sa Batasan Hills. Nasa QC. Ok take a guess…

The fact is we are far from the the crime scene which is Mindanao. But Manila is very much near from the criminal.

noelet wrote on July 14, 2005 - 12:04 am | Visit Link

Manila is like a small Philippines. Overcrowded with the different ethnic groups. May Bisaya, may muslim, may kapampangan… etc.

Or we can isolate the anti-Arroyo Cebu rally.

noelet wrote on July 14, 2005 - 12:09 am | Visit Link

if i am in our country now, count on me guys…. Gloria has to go. ano pa ba ang gusto nyang marating. yang pagtitipon na yan simboyo nga damdamin ng taong-bayan. of course, sabihin ng mga nasa probinsya na sa Emperial Manila lang ang langitngit at panawagan pero tinanong ba nila ang mga bahay-bahay.. di siguro.

see, sinabi halos ng lahat ng mga elected na kay gloria sila, of course, they have too dahil pareho lang silang gahaman ug hakog sa pwesto.

i think the lamed duck in malacañang has to go…..

That’s freedom of expression and reconciliation working. Kita mo yung mga oppressed nung Martial Law together with the likes of you know who. Very forgiving sila to past crimes but not to impropriety of a President. Ayaw ng impeachment. Resign daw. Ang gulo naman natin.

Si Drilon governance issue naman ang nilalabas. Di ba part siya ng administration, and does this mean that by turning his back on the President, he is confirming that the administration, which he was part of during the last elections, cheated.

Askal, ano bang konstitusyon yung sinasabi mo, nakakain ba yon…

baka daw ma infiltrate ng “bad elements”. bad elements like who? those who want arroyo to resign? do more of that and you’ll anger the people all the more.

But as always, rule of law should prevail. let us not jump to conclusion that “yun dagdag” na talaga. Let us give her a day in court, a chance to explain herself in the impeachment court. Kaya lang, wala rin akong tiwala sa mga senador natin, kahit walang kasalanan o me kasalanan si GMA, they will surely vote not because of their “konsensya” (kung meron pa) but to protect there interest. hehehe let us ask US to make the philippines part of their country nalang… kaya lang baka di din sila pumayag noh mahulo kasi tayo. Tayo mismo ang sumisira sa kinabukasan natin…

As the opposition blitz for the end game finally sputtered to a crawl, let us expect the onset of a war of attrition. It will be a long and ardous struggle with countless losses but damn if it won’t make life in Imperial Manila more colorful and interesting.

O ano kayo ngayon?

Naka-ilang comment na dito pero Wala ako makitang any numbers being quoted here a? What’s the matter? Skirting the reality of the dismal numbers that came to this fiesta rally?

If the numbers were truly impressive, one would expect everyone quoting impressive NUMBERS left and right. But what’s the best anyone can come up with?

You guys want some facts? I collected the following in 15 minutes. I wonder why a whole team of “investigative journalists” couldn’t even come up with a summary like this in the last 12 hours:

“Organizers said the crowd would swell over the day to 40,000 or 50,000 — a big step up from recent rallies of 8,000 but far from the hundreds of thousands who took to the streets of Manila to overthrow presidents in 1986 and 2001…. Beefing up a rally is not difficult in the Philippines, with people often offered a fast-food meal and a small payout to march and chant. But crowds have been known to lose their unity when the food or money runs short.”
(http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2005/07/13/chants_snac ks_at_anti_arroyo_rally_in_manila/)

“On both occasions, the Catholic Church and the powerful military withdrew their support from the presidents—but that hasn’t happened this time… Left-wing groups and supporters of Estrada—who has volunteered to serve as a transitional leader if Mrs. Arroyo is ousted—transported protesters by bus and jeeps from the provinces, police said…The crowd was a mix of leftist factory workers, students and star-struck supporters of Fernando Poe as well as of Estrada.”

“There were no signs yet that Arroyo’s traditional foes - leftist, student and farmers’ groups combined with supporters of deposed president Joseph Estrada - were being joined by the middle class, whose presence was crucial in past uprisings… The threat to reforms prompted Moody’s Investors Service on Wednesday to join the two other major ratings agencies in cutting a stable outlook for the Philippines to negative.”
(http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/F50756CE-56F3-4759-B6A4-AC8015 95BB12.htm)

And check this out (the HAKOT BUDGET — so much for sponteinuty):
“Anti-Arroyo forces said they have 25 million pesos (HK$3.51 million) for protests due to run until Sunday.”

ha ha ha:
“But the massive crowd’s mood was more festive than angry. It looked like a huge street party with an interesting mix of characters… Street vendors were out in full force, peddling corn on the cob, boiled bananas, fish balls, deep-fried chicken gizzards on a stick and scoops of ice cream on hamburger buns…. Music and entertainment were another crucial component, keeping the crowds from drifting away. Pop stars crooned on a huge stage and the “Sex Bomb” dancers–a group of young women in tight white tops and blue capri pants–did the classic bump and grind.”
(http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2005/07/13/politics.foodfest.peo ple.watching.in.anti.arroyo.rally.(7.40.p.m.).html)

Even more pathetic (akala ko ba there are hundreds of thousands of Pinoys in San Francisco? :-D ):
“Filipino-Americans in San Francisco, California, on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) staged a protest rally against President Arroyo… Thirty activists belonging to the US chapter of the left-wing Bayan Muna protested outside the Philippine consulate at about the same time that a similar demonstration was being held in Makati Wednesday afternoon.”

(http://news.balita.ph/html/public_html/article.php?story=200507130935 28832)

And some indication of what the aftermath of fieStas like these could be:

“Moody’s Investors Service decided Wednesday to join the two other major credit ratings agencies in cutting a “stable outlook” for the Philippines to “negative.” And the Asian Development Bank said its lending to the country over the next three years could range from nothing to US$1.5 billion (HK$11.7 billion) - depending on the pace of reforms.”

“Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank said on Wednesday it may cut off lending to the Philippines unless it speeds up reforms designed to shore up its fiscal position.”
(http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/F50756CE-56F3-4759-B6A4-AC8015 95BB12.htm)

I think ginagawa na ito nun pa man even before GMA’s time. Buti na lang at na reveal but everyone’s guilty of cheating. Magugulo tayong lahat. Pag nanalo ang opposition me namang contra so rally uli. The Philippines is a sinking ship. Konting kalabog na lang lahat tayo babagsak. Sige rally ng rally, in a couple of years me pilipinas pa kaya?

It’s all phoney. Phoney hobbies for a phoney nation.

benign0, enuff with the sarcasm, get off ur high horse and just say that ur pro gma and be done with it, ill respect u more for that. ksi i dont know where ur going with ur comments
=========

Is that all you can say now? I raised the reality of these “rallies” for all to see and the best thing you can come up with is to ask YET AGAIN if I am for or against GMA? Are those the only kinds of questions Pinoys can ask? Kanino ka ba? Kanino ka sasama? Pro ka ba or against?

This behaviour is one of the root issues of our society — to most typical Pinoys, it’s about loyalty to a PERSONALITY rather than to a PRINCIPLE.

I am here not because of any loyalty to any particular moron. What I’ve been doing is articulating PRINCIPLES. And yet typical Pinoys always can’t seem to elevate the discussion above personal loyalties.

Truly pathetic.

It’s no longer a surprise why our country is the basket case among basket cases.

what exactly benign0? if ur neither pro or against what are u for? being in ‘neutral third person point of view’, what do u hope to accomplish here? ur talk of principle is nice.. but weighing the reality is different..what exact principles are you fighting for? is it the four way test? rule of law?

sorry bro, wla ksi akong makitang prinsipyo sa comments mo.. like calling ppl in the rally ‘jologs’ or ‘hakot’ discriminatley categorizing ppl. if ur about principle wag mo naman ibadmouth ang mga tau na nagrarally, true may halo na iba an element dun pero un mga tau pumupunta dahil may hinanaing. were not all well off ppl u know. everyone isnt the same as u so sorry for being a ‘typical pinoy’. what loyalities are u talking about theres a rally because of the issue of ‘cheating’ pathetic talaga tyo at naging presidente natin c glo na nandaya. iba iba ang pananaw ng mga tau sa isyu respeto naman, dont dismiss us as pathetic beings.

So now it seems that the issue is to show some kind of “understanding” for the people who took to the streets. Now we try to paint them as “victims” whereas a couple of days ago they were supposed to be our warriors of truth and justics.

Talaga naman oo. Kaya tayo di nagkakaisa e.

See now how what a couple of days ago was a machistic battle cry to take to the streets is now a whimper of appeal to “understand” or even “respect” these pathetic people who chose to dance to the tune of the SexBomb dancers in Ayala.

True it is largely ignorance and lack of education plus an appreciation of a free meal that brought these people together. But who’s fault is that? Typical Filipinos (yes TYPICAL) will cite the usual suspects: Corrupt Government and our colonial past.

So what else is new.

Why should I be apologetic for my highhandedness? I don’t see any of these jologs apologising for their ignorance.

Last I heard, ignorance does not exempt one from compliance to the Law.

Bro, That was only a scheduled rally.. If you do not want to come, fine.. As far as Im concern, people who do not have a stand on this big issue do not deserve a greater leader of this nation.

Tsk tsk. Looks like people here have now stooped to a discussion on personalities.

So what kung “hindi ako ma-reach” according to one of these TYPICAL Pinoy hirits?

That’s the reality, dudes. DEAL WITH IT.

Seems like the reason we are now discussing these petty details is because the tide has now turned at the ISSUES level of the discussion, now that we have seen who are really behind these calls to take to the streets. Even sadder is the inconsistency of these left-wing “cause oriented groups”.

If you find some problem with being classified as jologs and hakots then DEMONSTRATE that you are above discussing LIKE jologs and hakots. Face the reality of the situation. Discuss the ISSUES.

And the issue is squarely flat on the table here:

Yesterday’s rally was a disgrace to the cause of resignism. Deal with that.

we need more ppl with geniune concern for the moral well being of this country, i cant stand to have a president who cheated the elections, what would that say about us as a nation to the world.. this is a different scandal than that of the US’ Bill Clinton in terms of cheating.

To all,

Honestly, I fully respect everyone’s position at hand.
Ke maki-gloria or pro-resign! And, am happy to be educated day by day.
Not until, all of us become “credible” to throw the first stone to a sinner!
This is probably a long shot, but together let’s give our best shot! Now!

Like it or not, history keeps on repeating itself. There are no coincidences!

Maybe friend is right when he said ” There is an UNSEEN HAND that has set up all this events,
such that everything seems to fit well and is systematic. Go beyond the smokescreen”.

But, who would tell who could that be?

Whether all of us would be able to see it clearly or not, the agenda of the unseen hand (good or bad) will be exposed in proper time not by the eyes but by the hearts. Our open hearts courageously enough to accept the wind of change, without reservation, decide the final blow of change.

In every passage of times, we are all players (groups or individual)
with different lines, colors and shapes trying to outplay each
other for a better position viewing the future. And once again, we are now in the center stage of an unfolding history of our time. Principled or not, known or unknown, there is a need to be sensitive what makes all people (not only the masses) move into one direction. Its not the one who can shout louder nor the one who can manipulate and control the rules. There is also a need to revisit the views of those who died in their times trying to make a radical or conservative image of change. The applicability and rightfulness of their “lines” then, no matter how simple or complicated, maybe, the best for now.

What should be exposed and prevented are those who liked to cling and maintain the status quo. For nothing substantial will happen if we will not evolve (physically, emotionally and spiritually) over time.

Old and young in us should be credible to effect a change for others
(no matter how basic or drastic) to have a clear view of the best to come. The path of cleansing process is not easy…but it is clearly emerging. We need to actively process and explore every ideas of times, objectively and positively. Hope we should never again allow ourselves to engage lengthily in negative discussions for it will just distract us from discerning better perspective. Sometimes, it force us to stop and missed a point.

As always, we need to accept that the chance of disagreement is very high in the process. We only need to respect each other. The big
challenge is when each and everyone of us keep on accusing each other of conspiring with evil. More than ever, we need to be sensitive to the flow of time to be able to engage correctly. We need not worry about the crooks and the wicked. Whether they like it or not, they will be exposed to death by each other. As dirty money will look for hidden wealth, their guns will look for guns. Sad to say too, good men and women will also die in the cleansing process, but their deaths will only amplify their voices. For one, remember our friend, Imo! He created something in me to have a simple lifestyle!

In 1986, most of us were all student, some were activists. In 2001, most of us have changed, some remained consistent (I salute them), and depending on one’s perspective, whether all are in agreement or not, we evolved to be better individual. Each having a different role to share in this new wave of change. For sure, some of you are better thinker than myself because of your experiences,
but more so, we need each other and other people of different lines, shapes and colors to give us a better
perspective of what future lies ahead of us.

Please correct me, but I simply believe that all the spectrum of our
political lines, shapes and colors (L, C, R, L-C, R-C) whatever we may call it, has something to share for our better future. For no one has the monopoly of righteousness, but yes, credibility makes it stronger. The call for constitutional turnover, truth commission, cha-cha, constitutional assembly, parliamentary, TRG, caretaker govt., etc. are all in the offering. I believe any of these options will only be meaningful, if and only if Gloria surrender her power. This is step one.The next step will only be envisioned to have a clear line, color and shape after the conclusion of the first step.
Logically speaking Gloria will not resign for fear she will end up sleeping with Erap in jail. Even the most trusted politicians, Jovy and Joker think its a political suicide to do so. But, again, who will conduct for the unseen hand to move? Is it FVR? JDV? CIA?, Military? Let us all remember they were all things of the past, our not-so-beautiful past. Nonetheless, together with them, the trapo and the masa, all of us once again, will be used as instrument, for another chance of change!
Whatever position of political lines, color and shapes, pro, anti and prayer rallies, all are collective segment and necessary ingredients of a meaningful change that is happening before us. Like it or not, political rallies will be called prayer rallies, only in the Philippines!

The unseen hand will force Gloria to resign eventually! And who could that be? Only GMA knows it. For she also as an instrument, her conscience will not sleep continuously not to understand reality.

Even if Gloria clings to power longer, the better for majority to be educated as more truths will uncover more lies in the government. As we have seen and other will start to see, Gloria is not only the problem.
More and more people in power and the corrupt system they are protecting will be exposed. Believe it or not, we will also start meaningful changes in ourselves. Again this maybe a long shot, but together let us all aim a bulleye in our heart.

More than ever, now is the proper time to correct the error of the past.
If this part of history will make us all witness to have 2 presidents in jail, so be it! And, let us work closely together to put into jail all corrupt government officials and businessmen! Others beware, for it will surely give the best education to our future leaders and children!

Again it is true that history keeps on repeating itself for us to correct what we did wrong and to change what is still needed to change.

Our challenge, I would say is how to continuously evolve as a better warrior of our times. Truly, the “unseen hand” is working for a better Philippines!

But again, who would tell us who could that exactly be? My answer will surely creates more questions! Like, Is impeachment being proposed by some well meaning individual could be an “unseen hand” doing?

Prayer is part of my answers!

GOD BLESS US ALL,

ELM

Benigno is asking for MATH. here. do your math:

ASKDOC said: Did some quick calculation using your formula and a streetmap.

The stretch of Ayala from makati med(salcedo street) to makati ave(manila pen) is around 1000 meters more or less. The width of ayala ave (inc. sidewalks) is around 40 meters. (my house is 40 x 80 m so I know how wide 40 meters is) That means the area is 40,000 sq. m.

The stretch of Paseo from Ayala to Makati Ave is about 500 meters x around 30 m width would give 15,000 sq m. or 55,000 sq meters total. Your formula means the crowd should be between 55,000 to 110,000.

AT around 6pm. RG Cruz of ANC reported that the crowd had swelled and had reached one block beyond the Manila Peninsula while on Paseo it had reached Buendia. That added 12,000 sq m in Paseo and about 6000 sq m from Ayala for a grand total of 73,000 sq m. So if my map is correct, the estimates at peak should be between 73,000 people to 146,000 people.

The police has the right formula, its the numbers they plug in that is “defective”.

AS USUAL, the police applied DAG-DAG BAWAS.

Benign0 said, ‘I raised the reality of these “rallies” for all to see…’

Contrary to what other realities or probably some parallel-dimension explanation, reality is talking about the core or the substance not a side trip to some lullaby fiesta.

The reality was there was a stage and a mic and in between those picnics and sex-bomb dancers, there was the core principle. Rather than faking side trip stories as the reality… better try exploring the real reality first.

noelet wrote on July 14, 2005 - 10:00 pm | Visit Link

Benign0 said, “… now a whimper of appeal to “understand” or even “respect” these pathetic people who chose to dance to the tune of the SexBomb dancers…”

There is a saying that a pearl cast in mud will not devalue itself. Nope, im not talking about the sex-bomb dancers. Nor to the jologs picnics waving their happy fiesta flags. And we dont have to understand to understand the ignorance that was there. Nor the hypocrisy of a free meal.

But we can talk in parallel to the hypocrisy of a moral principle - the pearl cast in mud. Its there in the rally.

Want some speeches? In the academe many were lost listening. In the the rally, its the same. People are standing rather uncomfortably for hours. They do know the topic and the principles behind it. But they want to hear something new and refreshing … or probably they want some hope. Just like what they find with Susan’s roar. While listening to those repetative comments on the issue they always see and hear on the media, they ignore or just let it pass or let them be.

These behavior is a typical pinoy. Its not the absence of knowledge but rather full of it.

The ignorance now falls on those who try to seek intelligence in themselves to answer some principles that they dont have.

Talk about being personal. Leftist. Pro-Erap. Anti-Erap. I hope some people would really start to look on principles beyond the headlines.

Yesterday’s rally was an achievement. Those who are expecting it and comparing it to people power dies with their obssession. What is it a disgrace to the cause of resignism? What is the cause of resignism then? The effect is the call for resignation. The cause is the discovery of election fraud.

And resignation as the case of Mrs. Arroyo will always be voluntary. So get real.

The headline reads… “The Biggest Anti-Arroyo rally…” Take that.

if we’re going to offer an alternative let us sell the idea to the people and show them that its better than what we have right now.

we dont even agree amongst ourselves if its going to be a transitional/revolutionary government or whatever…

lets not segregate knowledge from the people.

we know better then lets share it.

the fact that we cant answer the platforms of our “new government” just means we cant stand up for a logical debate or arguments.

noelet, believe me, ive never seen an apologist as passionate as you are. you are right in observing that the audience roared when they heard something new and refreshing; and then became inattentive when the trapos started talking about what they (the audience) already knew. but i nearly fell of my chair when you said “These behavior is a typical pinoy. Its not the absence of knowledge but rather full of it.” helllloooo! parang kahapon lang, i was in your shoes. i’ve seen these trapos piggy back to these events. i detested these opportunistic zealots. and you know what? i did they same thing that you did. apologise for them. well, well, well. a few months later nakaupo na sila sa puwesto. if i were you, id say to these opportunists who have unclean hands “GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!!”

jonathan, pinoy knows the issue. but the era of spontaneity has already eludes us. the rally has a single voice and that’s to show disgust to GMA. those oppurtunist, let them be. well, its really hard to tackle all the problem at once. for one, GMA is not cooperating.

i assure you that those socalled paid rallyist are contemplating on the issues at home. at home were they felt their thoughts more secure and free from government-back wiretapping.

yes i would reiterate my claim that pinoys have knowledge. its the leaders that dont. well, we are now behind the people power era and today only brute power is more animate than the truth.

we saw what marcos did. total brute force. remember that martial rule is constitutional. marcos used the constitution to his own benefit. just like GMA is doing now.

but the general public knows the truth about malacanan and their not happy. the surveys shows this. and im not apologistic about it. the rally is of a different matter and should be taken with consideration to pinoy values.

I joined the rally at AYALA basically to exercise my right as a Filipino citizen, taxpayer and finally as a voter for purposes of demanding Gloria to resign on account of her loss of moral ascendancy to govern our country.

The numbers in Ayala could have swelled further if not for the combined AFP/PNP efforts in actively preventing other rallyist in the provinces and neighboring cities and municipalities to participate.

Even the passenger jeepney that I was riding from QC to Manila was not spared from the occular inspection of searching for red banners and streamers.

Yes, instead of bombs or guns or canons or molotov bombs, the bopols were searching for protest/rally materials. And they have the gall to say that they are just performing their duties per the ” intelligence” they have gathered.

Unverified reports reached us that Manila Mayor Lito Atienza issued a directive to police authorities preventing Manilans to join the rally. But, this coming saturday, the employees of Manila City Hall are being enticed to join the PRO-GMA rally at Qurino Grandstand,Luneta under the promised that they will be given Php 2,000 each. Said amount to be paid shall be taken from the the Clean and Green Program of the Mayor.
PCIJ should consider investigating thi, if indeed this is true.

Going back to AYALA RALLY, Did i get paid or received Php 300, as what some bloggers posted, as a renumeration for joining the said rally?

A big resounding NO. Humbly aside, I even had to shell out my hard earned money to treat a bunch of hungry anti-gloria rallyists to a feast of kikiam and fishball incidentally sold by Aling Gloria.

Even I’m Php 285 poorer because of the no work policy implemented by my employer, at least, I’m patriotically refreshed.

Where All This Leads To?

As they say, history repeats itself. A deja vu feeling sets in while I size up the precarious situation we are in now. We’re back circa Nov. 2000 when the nation faced the dilemma of impeaching the sitting president Erap Estrada. The question is, does history will really repeat itself? In other words, does the present situation lead to an impeachment in Congress? If GMA is impeached, does it lead to a conclusive trial and conviction in the Senate? If not, does it all end up in another Edsa-like uprising? I’m pretty sure that all these possible scenarios play in my mind of our concerned citizens today.

But let me assess first the situation. Two factions of the opposition is present - one, resign-gloria-noli-takeover group of Cory/Drilon/Hyatt 10/MBC and two, resign-gloria-junta/council govt. of “mainstream” opposition of Erap/Eddie Vill/Rightists/Leftists and all other “tists”. With all the rallies mounted by the “mainstream” opposition, Gloria is at her pedestal. With the kamikaze calls of resignation of Hyatt 10/Cory/Drilon, still she was saved by the bell of another Eddie, the steady Eddie ex-president Ramos, seconded by the Jedi council head, Yoda, err, De Venecia.

With the military waiting (or intently watching)in the sidelines by insisting that they be apolitical, and with the bishops call not for GMA to resign but to resort to a constitutional process, thus, the opposition was left with no other recourse but to resort to the inevitable process of impeachment.

Judging with the Erap trial, this may take at least another 3 agonizing months if ever this will come into a conviction or acquittal. And again judging from the way the “Hello Garci tape” hearing is conducted in the House, i wondered if ever this may result in an impeachment. Therefore, i can draw up four (4)possible scenarios; immediate, short-term, medium-term and long term resolution of the crises.

Immediate Resolution

That Pres. Gloria will resign before the SONA on July 25. She will come to realize that it is no longer tenable to continue to govern the country and ask for sincere forgiveness, once and for all. With this statesmanship act, she will be allowed to travel to the U.S. to be with his Mike and son.

Short-Term Resolution

That PGMA will watch whether she can still muster enough loyal congressman to her side to prevent the impending impeachment. With the tight grip of the House, wherein congressmen might not support the impeachment move because of the charter change proposal of FVR where they all can benefit, they might as well kill the impeachment at the Justice committee deliberations. Therefore, the impeachment move is dead as well as the hopes of the bishops for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The opposition will not let this sitting down and once and all, call a last showdown in the street, ala-EDSA IV in the making. Following the “second envelope” situation like the Erap trial, they will mount daily rallies which will now be attended by the middle forces, silent majority, and all like-minded citizens who want the due process to continue. If there is a snowballing effect on these rallies, the military and the bishops will call the “withdrawal of support” which the opposition is waiting since Day one of the crisis. Bye-bye Gloria if this blueprint will happen.

Medium-Term Resolution

After so many hours and days debating on the complaint and with the very strong public-pressure, the president will be impeached in the House and the complaint transmitted to the Senate. GMA realizing the futility of going to a very sure conviction trial because of the lost majority in the Senate, will ultimately call it quits. Now she realizes she can’t win the battle in the minority-controlled Senate after the defection of Drilon et al.

Or perhaps she will go for a trial, hoping that perhaps she can persuade to her side one or two Senators in the minority (possibly Enrile and Angara who supported the charter change proposal of De Venecia) and tip the balance in favor of her acquittal. But with the overwhelming evidence and guilty-verdict of the public, this will result to a massive howl of protest which will again culminate in the streets. As if in cue, the military and the bishops will save the day for the beleaguered republic, as if they hold the key to the resolution of all political conflicts.

Long-Term Resolution

This may result in a trial but it drags on and on for months. Why? first they still want to confer with the Supreme Court whether the wiretap tapes is admissible or inadmissible in court. If admissible, the pro-gma may still want them first to be authenticated to FBI/Scotland Yard before this is being used in the trial. Before they can reached a verdict or resolution, the House will now be then finished with their Cha-cha thru Constituent Assembly and will now have a new Constitution ready for a plebiscite before year end. The people will now have lost their appetite for the continuation of the trial and will accept the parliamentary/federalism form of govt.

However, they will only realize later that the Cha-cha is being used only to bring back the government of Ramos with perhaps a term-sharing of De Venecia as prime minister for life.

Thus, ALL IS WELL THAT DOES NOT ENDS WELL.

Sorry my folks, but I’m beginning to believe what I’ve heard from a foreigner….”That the Philippines is a beautiful country but is not blessed with good leaders”.

drahcir wrote on July 15, 2005 - 5:45 pm | Visit Link

Actually, the fragmentism of the opposition is irrelevant. The question of “are the opposition prepared?” is just a bruhaha-speech of Malacanan trying to lure perception that the enemy of the state wants the country in peril.

The succession to Noli if GMA resigns is not really an option of the opposition, nor by Cory/Drilon/etc. Its really a constitutional remedy given that the president resigns.

The creation of a transitory gov’t is a more complex task and closer to impossible at the moment. that is an extra-constitutional step. right?

[…] President also dared those who want her to step down, “Show me the plan.” Just a day earlier Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas in Makati were filled with protesters demanding for Arroyo to quit her office amid allegations of wholesale fraud in the 2004 elections. […]

Exactly why on Earth is the need for the opposition to have a plan? And coming from Gloria, the pleading becomes ironic. Its not as if when the opposition got a good plan that Gloria will resign… that’s not what she’s been proclaiming.

The demand must come from the people… from the opposition: Gloria, what is your plan? You said the whole cabinet will tender their resignation? But they are still the same faces at your core official family. Was it another lie?

Gloria what is plan, shows us… to see the country loose itself in oblivion? to sow division among our people?

I think, Jonathan and Benigno just looked on our country’s problem in a different perspective. They are on the practical side just like most of the people who benifits from Arroyo’s stay in power. Of course they have businesses, they’re more cautious on our country’s economy, or else the business will suffer.

Transition in government will definitely cripple our economy and will take years to regain. It wont be allowable for people like these two.

They still could have that sense of nationalism, but its not their prime priority. What they want is for us simple pinoys to see that most of us loses practikalidad and sense of urgency to rise from poverty.

Peace Brother!

PR campaign ni GMA sa foreign country is in full force. Negative news about GMA is hardly pikced-up by major outfits (ie CNN) but just last night, Veronica Pedrosa is interviewing Teves doing a suttle PR job for her excellency GMA.

As before, they would say one thing here sa Philippines and then would tell another thing sa foreign community. Me hinala ako na meron silang connection sila sa CNN at Bloomberg.

Magkano kaya ang PR fund ni GMA excluding the soft-fund / contributed services from her allies sa Media and other “Thief in Barong”

It is not surprising to see if these (from Benign0) papers paints a negative pictures to those anti-GMA movements.

Too bad the opposition cannot even muster enough people to attend its rallies without the usual tawdry extravaganza of inviting aging and colorless movie stars. Susan Rocies may be an exception, but she needs to accept her late husband lost the elections and there is no use
dragging herself out and being exploited by the opposition to fire up a cause that has not gone anywhere.

On one point, we all need to heed Susan’s advice: Employ peaceful means provided by the Constitution to impeach President Arroyo, if there is any credible evidence. Lacson, Pimentel and their minions are reluctant to explore this knowing that tape was illegally tapped and cannot be used in any court of law. All we have is hysteria, with the opposition groups failing miserably to rile up the citizens against the president.

We need to banish the movie stars from any serious discussion of
national issues. Dancing, singing and shaking hands will not substitute for what they don’t have upstairs.
