Palace replies to NY Times

SAYING the threat to democracy in the country “comes from those who don’t respect the Constitution,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye today released a statement in response to a stinging NY Times editorial criticizing what it called the President’s “authoritarian tendencies.”
Bunye said the editorial was a “testimony to the fact that the opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions and overshadowing the great news being generated on the economic front.”
He said the Philippine Ambassador to Washington, Albert del Rosario, was in discussion with the Times about an official response from Malacañang. That response, he said, will tell “a story that is far different” from what was described in the Times editorial.
The full text of Bunye’s statement:
President Arroyo has worked steadfastly to preserve democracy in the Philippines. The destabilization plot that was behind the brief State of National Emergency proclamation was mounted by those who chose to ignore democracy and who have no respect for our Constitution and who are prepared to risk our important economic progress to suit their own political agenda. The only threat to democracy comes from those who don’t respect the Constitution.
I think all members of our media community can attest to the fact that press freedom is alive and well in the Philippines. We have a press that is far too active and aggressive to allow any institution or individual to stifle their reporting. The President is committed to maintaining that press freedom.
As to the reference to President Arroyo’s anti-terrorism stand, she is tackling that issue on three fronts. In the battlefield with support for military action against armed terrorists, at the negotiating table with those who now want to wage peace, and on the economic front where she is seeking to bring a better quality of life to those who have been affected by the scourge of terrorism.
There has been much progress on this front during the President’s term and as the President has stated, there will be more to come.
The Times editorial is unfortunately testimony to the fact that the opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions and overshadowing the great news being generated on the economic front.
Ambassador (Albert) del Rosario in Washington is in discussions with the Times regarding a response that will allow the Administration to present its side of the story to the readers of the Times. That is a story that is far different than featured in the Times editorial.

“I think all members of our media community can attest to the fact that press freedom is alive and well in the Philippines.”
did bunye read senate committee report no. 69?
I don’t think Bunye bothered to read the senate report. The only reason why the media remains untouched is because the palance is uncertain how the people and the foreign governments will react.
The administration’s usual rhetoric would be to blame the opposition.
If the only threat to democracy comes from those who don’t respect the constitution, then, the only threat to democracy are those usurpers at Malacanang. PI-Chacha, EO464, PD1017, CPR, illegal arrests, gagging media, lying, cheating, those are real actions which do not respect the constitution.
“The President is committed to maintaining that press freedom?” That’s why they shut off DZRJ’s radio program, raided Tribune, patrolled TV stations and released reporting guidelines for the mass media. Do they really believe on what they are saying, or do they really believe that people will actually believe what they are saying?
“opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions” Now they’re saying that everybody else except them are so dumb because they’re getting the wrong perceptions and cannot discern the good news from the palace by the river. Hey, they’vre been mouthing the same lines all along for the local media. And since these “dumb people” are that dumb, it is the fault of the irresponsible opposition.
kapal ni bunye to even mention “all members of our media community can attest that press freedom is alive and well in the phils”. the usual malacanang lines and damage control moves. but does bunye really think the NY times people are that stupid to just be influenced by the opposition in writing that stinging editorial?
well, jr_lad, he DID release that statement.
Wow, i can’t believe the same line in my sarcastic remark in MLQ3’s blog was used by the palace as answer the NYT’s editorial!
matalinhaga talagang magsalita si BUNyE
Bunye duckspeaks doublespeak doubleplusgood. (In other words: spin spin spin.)
noelle,
galing-galing! so apt!
a possible gonzales follow-up: NY times editorial crimethink doubleplusungood.
pag wala na si gma, si taunting BUNyE malamang mayor ulit sa muntinlupa…..MAYOR SA “LOOB” NG MUNTI.
well, on the other hand, am THANKFUL for Bunye’s continued existence in malacanan.
if he is not around, i would not have known there is truth on the Hello Garci tapes - he eloquently defended its existence and veracity.
also, he clearly mirrors GMA’s political advisers’ mindset - obvious dearth of substance and sorely lacking in historical parallelism. remember how he invoke “the Rubicon” to draw adherents to their immoral Cha-cha? without him realizing, the malacanan spokesperson is as usual, stoking the fire towards the direction off dreaded civil war.
i wish GMA will not serve Bunye his walking papers, altogether. in this way, he is my best bet that the usurper in malacanan will self-destruct without any iota of doubt.
They are so used to manipulating, intimadating and bribing people that they really believe that they can fool all the people all the time. And now they are trying to influence the NYTimes. I won’t be surprised if they hire lobby groups to do this. Can’t wait to see how NYT will react to all this.
after bunye, there’s claudio, defensor & gonzales. the complete cast of the bumbling bees too quick for their queen’s defense. and oh yes, almost forgot, there’s one more here in this blog.
Give Bunye a break, he’s just doing his job. Remember comical Ali? He was Saddam Hussein’s spokesman and he was still very confident of Iraq’s success against the US even when his country was already crumbling to pieces! Toting Bunye’s job description is such. Kawawa naman.
“The Times editorial is unfortunately testimony to the fact that the opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions and overshadowing the great news being generated on the economic front.”
laughable, absurd and pathetic, really. . .can’t they think of something better. so insulting. . .
Between New York Times and gloria arroyo &company, WHO HAS CREDIBILITY?
Sorry, the NYT is not Manila Times, Philippine Star or Manila Bulletin.
Neither the NYT can be coerced and intimidated.
The negative report is no handy work of the opposition and destabilizers.
It only reflects the activities of the people in the government. The NYT only speaks of the true state of the Phillippine nation.
The better advise should be “SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT”
[...] Piercing Pens links to a New York Times editorial that talks of President Gloria Arroyo’s “increasingly authoritarian tendencies”. PCIJ reproduces the statement delivered by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye who says the editorial shows that “the opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions”. [...]
the palace boys and girls had time (asia magazine) before.
now, anti-glorias have the (new york) times…
times > time. great!

at http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=1&story_id=71871 :
“US envoy: ‘NYT is private news media’”
“…’Like all news media, we appreciate their opportunity to speak freely,’ US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney told reporters Thursday…”
…let’s see if bunye & co. will be able to “coerce” NYT to make a retraction. time’s nelly sindayen didn’t and stuck to her story after a long while hiding from the press. (i have to stress i’m NOT insinuating nelly was bribed or perhaps, “soft touched.”)

“hala ka,” jon, like aimee, bunye took you seriously. in your next post, please say:
“i think taksil has done a thaksin already.” maybe bunye will again believe you.
Whether the NYT will give the opportunity to “the Administration to present its side of the story to the readers of the Times” remains to be seen.
Although a Liberal daily, the NYT has not been known to print irresponsible stories, most especially in its Editorial section. NYT is one of the most respectable dailies in the world; not to mention, it gives one a peek to the views of America.
On another side, the NYT Editorial simply gave a VOICE TO THE MAJORITY OF FILIPINOS who want GLUE-RIA OUT. Hopefully, the world will hear our cry, and just maybe what is about to unfold will be “a story that is far different than” Bunye’s Statement, or a Malacanan spin.
I think GLUE
(continuation…)
I think GLUE-RIA’s should start considering an exit scenario.
Palagay ko end-game na. I can see checkmate in three.
I agree with Mr. Bunye’s assertions. Eh, sino ba ang buma-baboy sa ating constitution?
[...] But what I find most laughable is the palace reaction to the Times op-ed piece. [...]
NEWSFLASH: Palparan, Esperon and Senga on the way to New York to padlock the offices of the New York Times on orders from Pandak. siRaulo Gonzalez is tagging along to serve an arrest warrant to the editor in chief!
Bunye will do and say anything to save gloria, because WHEN gloria goes, he goes, WHERE gloria goes he goes too. Their biggest problem when gloria goes is where to go. I suggest Somalia or Ethiopia, yan kung tatanggapin sila doon!!!
Gloria’s daily activities are no way presidential. She’s all over the country CAMPAIGNING for SURVIVAL not for the country but for herself!!! How can the country MOVE ON when all she does are Photo-ops and threadinng lies to cover up lies that cover the previous lies. If LICE grow everytime she lies, her body must be covered by FAT, THICK lice by now.
“I think all members of our media community can attest to the fact that press freedom is alive and well in the Philippines.” - Bunye
Agree ako diyan. Basta ba di kritikal sa administration, alive and kicking pa. Kung kritikal, either tigok, 50-50 dahil sa death threats, ilalagay sa payroll, o ite-take over.

Toting Bunye, walang ganyan sa states….
“Ambassador (Albert) del Rosario in Washington is in discussions with the Times regarding a response that will allow the Administration to present its side of the story to the readers of the Times. That is a story that is far different than featured in the Times editorial.” - Bunye
What story? A story of lies and lies and nothing but lies? Remember the “I will not run!” Its a horrible hair-raising tale!
Well, “I am sorry!”

“The Times editorial is unfortunately testimony to the fact that the opposition’s irresponsible political efforts are impacting international perceptions and overshadowing the great news being generated on the economic front.” -Bunye
Really? so, are we going to take over New York Times ala Tribune?
http://www.philippinepage.blogspot.com
sabi nga ni Bunge este Bunye pala, ang oposition pala ang pinakikinggan ng international media, e di sila ang paupuin natin.alis na kayo diyan sa malacanang.
If we racall, NEW YORK TIMES WAS PARTLY responsible in the Nixon fall in the 70s when it published the “PENTAGON PAPERS”
.
The Nixon and gloria affairs has some identical similarities. Both utilized cover ups, wire tapping, obstruction, used the bureau of investigation, the intelligence service, derailed lawful inquiries, made false statements, meaning he lied too.
The only difference is that Nixon DID NOT talk to an election officer in his 1972 re-election bid . ANOTHER big difference is that Nixon won FAIR AND SQUARE 60% popular votes.
Nixon resigned in 09August1974, avoiding impeachment.
The New York Times report during the Nixon controversy were credible and factual? Need I say more?
No one can dictate the NY Times of what opinion they can choose to publish… Their credibility to the whole world is uncomparable to the credibility of Bunye… I think this is a wake up call to the Arroyo Administration to respect the rights of Filipino people especially the media..
