- Keith Bacongco: Knowing Nograles and his Big Boss...garapalan na lang talaga.

- Lead Philippines: But without credible mass media there, what is left to protect the people..?
- vonjobi: it's juned sOniDo.
Untouchable po ba sila cory at danding at hindi magawang batikusin ng media about these two massacres?
- hopeless_race : Its sad that we pinoys are blind to the fact of what had happened in mendiola and hacienda luisita.
- hopeless_race : Wilkins" brand, for P1.4 billion.-1999 Sugarland Multi-Food Corp. for P2.9 billion 2001- Purefoods Corp P7 billion P60 billion Coca-Cola ... See More 2002- Cosmos Bottling Corp. from RFM Corp. for P14.1 billion October 2008- GSIS' shares in Meralco worth PHP30 Billion. December 2008- country's biggest oil refiner, Petron Corporation. international company shopping spree: Australian boutique brewer J. - sevens21 : Dati input mo lng name at SSS ID makukuha mo agad STATIC INFO...
- guest_899 : we must check the background of each potential candidates to avoid having another big mistake like GMA
- guest_899 : congratulations to PCIJ, more power and God Bless !
- jazzymuver : how did Arroyo swallow that kind of things!! how come that she just spend the money our countrymen for her own sake!!
- guest_3664 : i would be glad if u can include the investigation of the manner public officials announce infra projects as per COA regulation. It is frustrating to see their faces on the tarpaulin instead of the prescribed information like name of project, date of implementation, amount of contract, source/s of fund, among other things. This is very rampant here in Marikina. Thanks and more power on your noble endeavors. We need people like you to have make our country great again.
- jhanz_08 : im making research on R.A 9136...with rgards to the privatization of NPC..could someone out there can let me understand more bout this matter?why was monopoly dismantled?email me..jhanycem@yahoo.com...thanks much

Teaching kids the love of reading

IT is often said that Filipino children hardly ever read. Education experts are not happy about this, and say the love of reading should be nurtured among the young. Reading, they say, opens the mind to the endless possibilities of discovery and learning, and adults must strive to provide every child with the environment for that potential.
In Barangay Paltok in Quezon City, in an old house built in 1936 that has been turned into a community library, children are learning that, indeed, reading is fun.
Every Saturday, young volunteers come to Aklatang Pambata to give the children of Bgy. Paltok various fun and learning activities that aim to teach them to love the written word. The library is young, but has created such an impact on the village children who come knocking on its gates every Saturday morning. When the gates finally open, the children walk in with palpable excitement, choose a comfortable seat or slump on a mat, and devour one of hundreds of story books lining the shelves scattered all over the house. They get luckier on some other Saturdays, when they are taught how to play the hegalong, or to make puppets and tell stories with them, or express their artistry in one or another workshop.
Aklatang Pambata is coordinated by Troy Lacsamana, a professional librarian who was recognized by Hands On Manila last year as one of its Faces of Volunteerism.
This podcast tells a story about the children of Bgy. Paltok, Aklatang Pambata, and Troy and his fellow volunteers who endeavor to make Pinoy children more literate.

this is certainly one of the great posts…
to parents out there, the works of dr. luis gatmaitan are worth collecting and kids enjoy reading them!
PCIJ features Aklatang Pambata…
…The podcast tells the story of how the library was set up……
And here’s one that is worth looking and emulating yours truly and my townmates worldwide CARE — Concerned Alimodiananon Resources on Education and DEAR–Drop Everything And Read at alimodian.net Kids just love it and it comes with snacks and refreshment and lots of tender loving care… check it out.
I just noticed it. you may clik my link.. thanks
great podcast, vinia!
i was in aklatang pambata (www.aklatangpambata.org) when vinia was recording for this podcast. i was taking pictures all through out that saturday activity. if you want to see pics that accompany the podcast, check out the following link: http://chrislagman.com/aklatan/ (you can also see vinia in some pics recording the goings-on).
baycas, i’m happy you liked the podcast. i agree, dok gatmaitan is such a good storyteller. there are a lot of others, right? like that ncca article, which i linked to this blog post said, there is no dearth of children’s literature in our country. adults will certainly have no excuse that they don’t have anything good to read to kids!
Filipino Librarian, thanks for telling your readers about the podcast. i can imagine your pride for fellow filipino librarian troy.
naykika, thanks for the links.
chris, thanks, and lovely snaps! too bad you missed the puppet show last saturday. di bale. you and your friends will be back, right?
hey vinia - definitely coming back. this saturday another group of volunteers from trend micro will be there. thanks for writing about aklatan, i hope many more would-be volunteers get inspired. mabuhay ka!
[...] While we were there, we met Vinia, a journalist of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ). She was covering the happenings. A PCIJ blog article on Aklatang Pambata eventually got published, with an accompanying podcast. [...]
[...] On May 27, a few volunteers from Trend Micro, a multinational IT company in Eastwood City, trouped to Aklatang Pambata (also known as Narciso Abiad Community Library) in San Francisco Del Monte, Quezon City. Do read related entries: (1) from Pinoy Urban Living Blog, (2) from this blog, and (3) from PCIJ.org blog. It was such a fun and inspiring experience for the Ate and Kuya volunteers that they did a take two on June 17. (They brought more volunteers too!) Early morning of this same day my plane touched down Centennial Terminal from Los Angeles, and thus I was once again saling-kit as photographer. For selected photos, please go to http://chrislagman.com/aklatan2/ [...]
Humayo tayo at magpakarami.
Kudos to you folks (both PCIJ and Aklatang Pambata).
Some of us are interested in following your example. Would you have a quick guide or road map? I know transfer of tech needs hands-on experience but I think this idea can be replicated to other areas faster and more efficiently, especially in the provinces where they have internet but no funds to travel to Barangay Paltok. Please see
http://www2.kaboom.org/
They have do it yourself resources and roadmaps, would it be difficult to come up with these types of resources?
presintado, thanks. let me forward your message to troy, so he can communicate with you directly.
